Dental Implants

Tooth loss can impact our lives in so many ways, many of which we might not realise until there is a gap in our smiles. At North Brisbane Dental Clinic, we work closely with implant specialists to co-ordinate implant placement and restoration, so our patients can regain their smiles.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are the only tooth replacement option that replaces the entire tooth––even the root. A dental implant consists of three main parts:

  1. The dental implant screw – the artificial tooth root
  2. The abutment – a small attachment to secure the restoration to the implant screw
  3. The restoration – a crown, bridge or denture used to replace the visible part of the missing tooth or teeth

What Is the Process for Dental Implants?

The dental implant process consists of four main phases.

Planning – To determine if dental implants are an option for you, we will take digital x-rays and 3-D imaging to evaluate bone levels and ideal dental implant placement. We will discuss whether you are replacing a single missing tooth or multiple missing teeth and what to expect.

Surgery – Dental implant oral surgery is placing the dental implant screw into the jawbone. Patients typically tolerate this type of surgery quite well, with only minor post-surgical discomfort. We can talk about what to expect at your dental implant consultation.

Healing and Integration – Your dental implant requires a solid foundation to support the restoration and absorb the force of chewing. Initial healing of the gum tissue takes only a week or so. Full integration can take 3–6 months. Since dental implants are made of biocompatible titanium, your dental implant will actually fuse to your natural bone.

Restoration – Restoring your dental implant is the most exciting part of treatment. A tooth-coloured crown, bridge or denture will complete your smile. All of our restorations are customised to blend in naturally with your teeth. This phase of treatment can take more than one appointment. You will have an opportunity to discuss your final restoration options with your dentist.

Caring for Your Dental Implant

Another reason dental implants are so popular is because you can care for them exactly like your natural smile. Single dental implants can be brushed, flossed and treated like your natural tooth. For dental bridges and dentures, we will go over the best way to protect your smile, dentistry and health at your final appointment.

What If I Want to Avoid Surgery or Cannot Have a Dental Implant?

At North Brisbane Dental Clinic, we always present all of your treatment options, and the choice is yours. We understand some people prefer to avoid surgery or cannot have surgery due to medical conditions. We also offer dental bridges, traditional dentures and partial dentures as alternate options to replace missing teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Just like any prosthetic, whether your hip or knee, implants are not for life. They may eventually require replacement. Studies show that over 20 years, implants have a survival rate of around 85–90 per cent. So, they are very successful treatment modalities. However, they are not without complications. Implants are similar to your natural teeth; the gums can develop gum disease—the most common cause of dental implant failure.

3 Tips to Improve the Longevity of Dental Implants

The most important thing to allow your implant to last for as long as possible includes three things:

  1. You need to look after your general health. You can't have good oral health without a solid foundation in overall wellness.
  2. You need to ensure that your gum health is excellent. Gum disease can destroy the bone that is the foundation for your teeth and dental implants.
  3. Keep up on maintenance; this includes both at-home teeth brushing and flossing and seeing us regularly for six-month checks.

We proudly provide dental implant dentistry for our patients in North Brisbane, Lutwyche, Clayfield, Windsor, Grange, Gordon Park, Kalinga, Kedron, Stafford, Ascot, Chermside, Everton Hills and Wooloowin, QLD.

A dental implant is essentially a titanium screw that gets placed into the bone to replace the missing tooth.

The implants are made of titanium, meaning they are very biocompatible. And over three months, the implant will integrate with your natural bone to form a strong and rigid connection, which is why they are such excellent treatment options for replacing missing teeth.

Why Should I Get a Dental Implant Instead of a Bridge?

If you have missing teeth, are interested in a fixed appliance, and you're looking into a dental bridge, a tooth implant is a great alternative. They are much less invasive than your conventional bridge, which may involve altering the surrounding healthy teeth.

Implants are great for single tooth gaps, particularly in the back and the front of the jaw, to restore function and aesthetics.

We Welcome You to Contact Our Dental Clinic

At North Brisbane Dental Clinic, we warmly welcome patients from Wooloowin, North Brisbane, and the surrounding communities for dental implant consultations in addition to your family's general dentistry needs. In addition to dental implants, we also offer dental bridges and other tooth replacement options, such as dentures and partial dentures.

Dental implants are a great opportunity over other treatment options. For example, if you compare implants with dentures for day-to-day use, an implant doesn't require you to insert or remove the appliance; it's fixed. As long as you maintain your dental implant and health, it's an option worth considering compared to a denture.

The process of having an implant is completed in stages, and your dentist will co-ordinate these steps with our implant specialists.

The Two Stages of Dental Implants

Remember that dental implants require two stages.

  1. The tooth implant has to be placed into the bone. Most patients tolerate this procedure well, with minimal discomfort for just a few days following the surgery. This phase of treatment is completed by a specialist, who closely co-ordinates your treatment with our team.
  2. Wait about three months for the implant to heal and integrate with the jawbone. Once the specialist has confirmed your implant has integrated and is firm and healthy, one of our dentists will place a porcelain tooth (crown) on the implant.
