Tooth loss is sometimes unavoidable. Have you got a missing tooth, and considered a dental implant but weren’t quite sure what they were, or were scared off by the thought of what’s involved? Rest assured it is actually a relatively straightforward and common procedure, and you can read about the process involved here. Dr Andrew Liaw and Dr Sheng Quach are our resident implant providers, and they've compiled some of the top reasons dental implants are a popular tooth replacement option.

 1. They feel great.

Implants are the closest thing we have to replacing a tooth with a tooth. As they are strongly anchored into the bone, they provide maximum support for chewing, allowing you to eat and talk comfortably. Compared with dentures, there is no need to take them in and out every day, which means less fiddling around and more comfort!

2. They look great.

Implants not only function like natural teeth, but they can also help to improve self-confidence by replacing the gaps in your smile. They come in a range of shapes, sizes and even colours to match seamlessly with the surrounding teeth – and no one will be able to tell the difference! Another benefit to implants is their ability to preserve the jawbone, and prevent bone loss, which can affect the structure and appearance of your face over time.

3. They go the distance.

Studies show the high survival rate of dental implants to be around 85-90% after 20 years, making this a very successful and reliable treatment modality. With proper care and maintenance however, implants can and do last well beyond this timeframe. Additionally, they are a lot less invasive than a bridge that also involves the surrounding teeth.

4. They're cost effective.

Initially, implants are more of an investment compared to other tooth replacement options. But you may be surprised how affordable they've become. In our practice, an entire implant, including the planning, placement, review appointments, porcelain crown costs $5000 - $6000, depending on the individual case. In comparison, dentures and bridges will almost certainly need to be replaced multiple times throughout the course of your lifetime, adding to their expense. With proper care, implants can last well beyond 20 years.

5. They're easy to maintain.

One of the many benefits of dental implants is that you care for them just like natural teeth. Conventional dentures and bridges can take a little more effort to keep clean and healthy due to them taking up more space in the mouth and collecting plaque more easily. It’s still important to maintain a good home care routine that includes proper brushing and flossing combined with professional exams and cleanings in our dental clinic to look after your implant. Dr. Andrew and our hygienists will always show you some tips and tricks to clean around your implant and answer any questions you may have on maintenance.
