You've just had your tooth taken out. Now what? Dr Louise McCallum discusses the best aftercare once you have a tooth extraction.
Here are some helpful DOs and DON'Ts after tooth extraction.
Tips on What to Do after Tooth Extraction
- Remember to rest. Don't do anything too intense for 24 to 48 hours afterwards.
- Keep on top of your pain relief. Your dentist will prescribe the right pain medication for you.
- Use your gauze as required. If you're getting some bleeding, gently bite on the gauze, holding it for 15 to 20 minutes until it stops.
- After 12 hours, start with salt water rinses.
Here Are Some Don'ts after Tooth Extraction
Now some important don't things to avoid after tooth extraction.
- Don't smoke for as long as possible.
- Don't use a straw. This can cause a sucking motion to dislodge the clot.
- Don't hesitate to call if you have any questions regarding the area or any follow-up care required.
