How long do dental implants last?

Just like any prosthetic, whether your hip or knee, implants are not for life. They may eventually require replacement. Studies show that over 20 years, implants have a survival rate of around 85–90 per cent. So, they are very successful treatment modalities. However, they are not without complications. Implants are similar to your natural teeth; the gums can develop gum disease—the most common cause of dental implant failure.

3 Tips to Improve the Longevity of Dental Implants

The most important thing to allow your implant to last for as long as possible includes three things:

  1. You need to look after your general health. You can't have good oral health without a solid foundation in overall wellness.
  2. You need to ensure that your gum health is excellent. Gum disease can destroy the bone that is the foundation for your teeth and dental implants.
  3. Keep up on maintenance; this includes both at-home teeth brushing and flossing and seeing us regularly for six-month checks.
