Does your partner complain that you snore? Do you often feel tired during the day? You may have sleep apnoea or hypopnoea, which can be a serious health concern. In some cases, this can be treated by simply wearing a specially designed splint (mouthguard) during the night.
Sleep apnoea (cessation of breathing during sleep) can have a devastating effect on your health, work and relationships. If you have had problems with snoring and sleep apnoea for an extended period of your life, you will be well aware of how tired and irritable it can make you feel, not to mention the flow on problems relating to decreased ability to concentrate, increased risk of motor vehicle accidents and daytime sleepiness. Something you may not be aware of, is the serious impact this chronic problem can have on your health. Sleep apnoea carries with it an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, diabetes and high blood pressure.
Some people may not be aware that they even have sleep apnoea.
Some of the common signs and symptoms of sleep apnoea are:
- Partner notices you stop breathing
- Choking sensation during sleep
- Frequent visits to the bathroom during sleep
- Daytime tiredness
- Lack of energy
- Poor concentration / memory
- Falling asleep during the day
Luckily, this condition is completely treatable. There are a range of treatment options available for sleep apnoea, including (but not limited to) weight loss, improved sleep hygiene, CPAP machine and Somnodent (mandibular advancement splint).
Managing sleep apnoea from our clinical perspective is a team effort. A doctor or dentist cannot do this alone. A team approach, including your GP, sleep physician, dentist and sometimes ENT surgeon, is the best way to determine the most appropriate treatment for your sleep apnoea.
Dr Georgia Sheahan at North Brisbane Dental Clinic can co-ordinate this team for you. She can organise appropriate referrals for sleep studies, and can make a somnodent splint for you if necessary.
