Gum health? Whiter smile? All in 1? Choosing the right toothpaste from what seems to be endless options lining the market shelves can be an overwhelming task. Although choosing what is on sale seems to be the easiest option, let’s chat about what the must-haves of a toothpaste are.
The Importance of Fluoride:
One non-negotiable ingredient to look for in toothpaste is fluoride. This component strengthens your enamel, not only preventing tooth decay but also reversing early signs of cavities. It's crucial to ensure that children are using age-appropriate toothpaste, as different amounts of fluoride are optimal for different age groups. Despite what you may hear, no other ingredient matches fluoride in its efficacy. We even have safe bits of it deliberately placed in our Australian water!
A Closer Look at Natural Toothpaste:
The difference between 'regular' and natural toothpaste lies in the ingredients and formulation. Natural toothpaste often omits additives, artificial flavors, colors, and preservatives, opting instead for natural ingredients such as baking soda, essential oils, and plant-based abrasives. As a result, the texture may appear different, often with a grittier texture. However, most natural toothpaste formulations do not contain fluoride, thereby lacking its benefits. From a dental care perspective, regular toothpaste takes the lead in protecting our enamel.
What should I use for sensitive teeth?
If your teeth are generally sensitive to cold, there are plenty of good options available. Suggestions include Colgate Pro-Relief and Sensodyne – each with its own mechanism of action that proves varied efficacy for each individual. It is best to try different types of sensitive toothpaste to test which works best for you.
What about Hismile?
The dental industry is aware of the craze surrounding the toothpaste created by Hismile, known for its extravagant flavors that deviate from the classic minty ones. From a dental standpoint, it presents itself as a worthy alternative, especially for those adverse to minty flavors allowing individuals to enjoy brushing more and promoting oral health. A key point to note is that the fluoride content slightly falls below that of other brands of toothpaste, with a content of 1100ppm compared to 1450ppm.
How’s whitening toothpaste?
Thinking of achieving the Hollywood smile with whitening toothpaste? Hold your horses and proceed with caution. Whether it is the classic whitening option, contains charcoal or purple elements they are often too abrasive in nature, stripping away your healthy enamel and leading to increased sensitivity.
I Can't Use Toothpaste with SLS – What Do I Do?
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), a common ingredient used for foaming, appears to cause adverse reactions for some people. A great alternative toothpaste without SLS but still contains a good amount of fluoride is Sensodyne’s Repair and Protect.
Consult with your dental practitioner to determine which toothpaste aligns best with your oral health needs and preference. Don’t forget, no matter what type of toothpaste you are using, use it twice a day with your brushing and avoid rinsing with water afterward to ensure you're not washing away all that good stuff!
