How do I get my kids to brush their teeth?

Do you have trouble trying to get your kids to brush their teeth? If you're anything like me, it's a constant battle! When my kids were smaller, I'd hear all sorts of excuses as to why it was simply impossible for them to brush their teeth (I did it yesterday, I'm too tired, the toothpaste is gross, I just washed my hair, why do I have to brush my teeth as well, it's holidays). Trust me, if kids have come up with it, I've probably heard it. Thankfully, the modern world is aware of our plight and has come up with a few gimmicks that can help coax our offspring to brush their teeth.

  • Electric toothbrushes for kids are a fantastic invention. The cheap battery operated ones from the supermarket are great. They get the job done, have colourful stickers on them, and kids often love the novelty.
  • Star charts. I know, I know, this involves work on the part of an already exhausted parent, but if your child loves stickers/stamps, star charts are a cheap and easy way to encourage the little mites to brush and perhaps get a reward at the end of the week.
  • Apps. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. We're all worried that our kids spend too much time on screens (well, I am anyway), but why not use it to our advantage? There are a handful of decent apps that make a game of toothbrushing. Wiggles, Brush DJ, Disney, Brusheez and Pokemon are just some of the ones I've seen.

So, I say to all the parents out there, keep fighting the good fight and do whatever it takes to get your kids to keep their pearly whites white!

Till next time,
