Dry Mouth: Causes, Risks and Management

Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night with the feeling that your mouth is as dry as the Sahara Desert? Sadly, this is not overly uncommon, (especially if you’ve enjoyed some alcohol the previous night) and can be quite uncomfortable. This run of the mill “dry mouth” is due to dehydration, and is easily relieved by….you guessed it…..drinking water!

Mouthguard Season!

 

At this time of year, when many winter sports are beginning their season, we often have a lot of enquiries about mouthguards.

Which sports require mouthguards? Are boil and bite mouthguards ok, or are custom made mouthguards required? 

As a general rule of thumb, if a person is participating in a sport where facial contact is possible, a mouthguard should be worn. The Australian Dental Association has released a list of sports where mouthguards are recommended for training and competition. This list can be found at www.mouthguardawareness.info
